SOCP 376 - Children and Youth

This course focuses on the conceptual category of youth. Questions that will be addressed include: How has the category of youth changed and remained the same overtime? How is youth defined across different cultures and communities? What drives the definition of youth? How is youth experience defined and refined by identity? How does family include childhood and youth development in positive and negative ways? When and how do social institutions like education and work influence youth? How do youth respond to social inequalities and issues of justice? The goal of this course is for students to reflect on their experience as a young person and assess how society includes and excludes youth, which youth are included or excluded, and why these systems of youth inclusion and exclusions might exist. Furthermore, students will be asked to assess how these concepts apply to the work they hope to do in the future.
