SOCP 372 - Law and Society


The formulation of law is a social process. The sociology of law is the study of how legality enters political, economic, and cultural practices, who has power to influence legislation, and who benefits. This class focuses on the intricate relationship between legal systems and societal structures and how everyday life creates and incorporates legal meanings and practices. The course will examine how law both shapes and is shaped by social norms and will consider how legal frameworks and systems impact and shape the opportunities and trajectories of individuals and communities. Individual and organizational processes are governed by laws and laws are used for domination and for social change. This course will cover the basics of what the sociology of law is, what laws are and how they operate, the influence of sociology in the creation and study of the legal system, punishment, jurisprudence, and the future of the sociology of law.
