SOCP 368 - Immigration and Migration


This course explores various aspects of immigration and migration, examining the causes, processes, and impacts of migration on individuals, societies, and global communities. Through a sociological lens, students will delve into theories of migration, historical and contemporary migration patterns, policy impacts, and integration challenges. Drawing on existing theories and empirical studies, this course will address why people migrate, how citizens respond to migration, how federal and local governments regulate migration and social membership, and how local communities manage the settlement of newcomers. The goal of this course is to foster a comprehensive understanding of migration phenomena, encourage critical thinking about complex migration issues, and develop empathy and cultural sensitivity towards migrants. Within the global context, special attention will be paid to US immigration patterns, policies, and current issues.
