SOCP 358 - Death and Dying


Aging and dying are universal, but how individuals and societies respond to these processes varies drastically and is shaped by social, cultural, historical and structural factors. This course will introduce you to sociological theories, concepts, and empirical findings in the study of aging, dying, bereavement and grief. Specific topics covered include aging and life course, the biology and medical management of aging, end-of-life ethical issues, facing mortality, moving through grief, cross-cultural and ancestral approaches to the transition to death, and more.
