ETHN 319 - Indigenous Feminisms

When looking at the atrocities committed against Indigenous communities and the contemporary struggles these communities now face, we rarely hear about the experiences of Indigenous Women in these struggles. This course highlights Indigenous women and how they have always held positions of power in their communities as tribal leaders, political leaders, medicine women, and advocates. We will explore the concepts of Indigenous feminisms, and we will explore the ways that Indigenous feminisms expand beyond other feminist theories, particularly in relation to settler colonialism, and focus on the ways that Indigenous communities are empowered through nation-building. Our course materials will come from a variety of fields and scholars with a focus on Indigenous authors, theories, and experiences.

Prerequisites & Notes: ETHN 201 or ETHN 202.
