ETHN 252 - Introduction to Arab American Studies What are the major factors behind Arab immigration to the US? Is there a difference between anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia? Can the Arab American experience be separated from the Palestinian struggle? How did 9/11 impact Arab Americans? This course explores these and other issues to provide an overview of the Arab American experience since the early twentieth century: immigration and racism, gender and sexuality, religious affiliations, popular culture, and politics and political activism. This is an interactive course which will incorporate current events into class discussions as appropriate. Students will engage with interdisciplinary materials from social media and film to ethnography, history, sociology, and cultural and literary texts.
