ETHN 301 - Ethnic Studies Theory This course identifies and critically examines the theories that are core to Ethnic Studies such as White Supremacy, Racial Capitalism, Critical Race, Coloniality, Decolonization, Post-coloniality, Intersectionality, “OutCrits,” Indigeneity, Refusal and Racial Governance. These theories were created to explain, understand, and predict phenomena including racism, genocide, sexism, economic oppression, homophobia and transphobia. Each week the class will begin with the foundational, and seminal readings of each theoretical framework. The latter part of the week will be spent exploring how these theories have been affirmed, contested, and reframed by scholars and activists in the face of ongoing racism, settler colonialism, and global environmental, economic, and political changes. This is a lecture-based course with weekly class discussions so there will be moderate-to-heavy student interaction.
