A/HI 211 - History of Western Art I: Prehistory to the Middle Ages This course examines Western art from Prehistory to the Middle Ages, concentrating on representative works that shaped — and were shaped by — Western culture’s social, political, economic, and intellectual history. There will be a strong emphasis, too, on questions of visual analysis and interpretation. The goal is to impart not only a body of art historical knowledge but also a set of critical tools and visual literacy. The visual and aesthetic core aspects of the course will be further elucidated with primary sources and documentaries.
