MLE 546 - Methods in Multilingual Disciplinary and Critical Literacies This course focuses on principles and methods for building students’ disciplinary and critical literacies, with special attention given to work with students at developing, expanding, & bridging levels of language proficiency across P-12 grades. The course is framed by a culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogical approach, holding central the notion that literacy instruction involves a dynamic interaction of readers, texts, and contexts. It builds on the functional approach to language established in MLE 444 by providing guided practice in material selection and development, the integration of language, literacy, culture, and content learning, to include strategic uses of translanguaging. Students engage in task and lesson design that integrates interpretive and expressive modes of language. This course requires participation in an embedded practicum with language learners.
