SOC 351 - Police, Social Control & Democracy Applies a sociological perspective to explore the relationship between the police, social control, and democracy. Examines theoretical and empirical scholarship on the policing of social control, societal control of the police, and changes in the institution of policing (organizational, technological, and legal) related to the control of marginalized groups, national borders, civil disorders, and those expressing social and political dissent. Addresses the paradox that police are both necessary for the preservation of democratic societies and a potential threat to democratic societies.
