SOC 382 - Community and Urban Sociology


Introduction to central theoretical perspectives on communities and cities, the processes of urbanization, and the challenges facing contemporary urban dwellers. Focuses on how political, social, and economic forces have shaped processes of urban development and how this urbanization has reshaped the physical form, social structure, and functions of communities. Contemporary urban challenges such as concentrated poverty, residential segregation, riots, structural deterioration, and economic and political restructuring will receive central attention, as will issues of global urban development and the future of cities.

Prerequisites & Notes: Any course from: SOC 221, SOC 234, SOC 251, SOC 255, SOC 260, SOC 268, SOC 269, SOC 271, HNRS 252 or instructor permission.
