Introduction

Western’s Honors College allows students to combine the best of a private liberal arts college experience (small classes, interaction with professors and other students, and the opportunity to work on research and creative activities with faculty) with the advantages of a much larger public institution, including a wide variety of majors, outstanding academic facilities, and numerous extra-curricular options.

Why Consider an Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Minor?

The Honors College is structured in a way that provides a graduated, on-going experience for students as they engage in increasingly sophisticated work while moving through their Western degree. Students in the Honors College are eligible for HNRS courses and have the opportunity to undertake extended Honors independent study projects in their major fields.

Grade Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required for a student’s major or minor courses, and supporting courses for majors and minors.

Requirements (28-38 credits)

Lower-Division Colloquia (6-10 credits)

What does “colloquia” mean? Colloquium is from the Latin verb loqui, meaning “to talk or speak.” Our colloquia offer students the opportunity to satisfy General University Requirements (GUR’s) in an engaged Honors setting. Rather taking an introductory course in a large lecture hall setting, students can take equivalent courses in a small discussion-based setting, typically around 20 students.

Upper-Division Seminar (6 credits)

Seminars are courses offered in an array of fields that change each year.

  • ❑ Two seminar courses are required:

  • Credits: 3 (repeatable with different topics)

Senior Capstone (3-9 credits)

An Honors Senior Project is required for graduation through the Honors College. This is concentrated work in a student’s major field or another field. It is not unusual for a student to be engaged in Senior Project work before their final year.

  •   Credits: 1 (Students should take HNRS 390 at least a year before graduation, to plan the capstone work.)
  •   Credits: 1-4 Students register for 1 to 4 credits in any given quarter (they must take a minimum of 2 total credits of HNRS 490 and may take a maximum of 8 total credits of HNRS 490).
