SWP 560 - Addictions in Society The problem of addiction is well-documented in the annals of history. Why might people suffer from addictions? What contributes to the proliferation of addictive behaviors? How does psychosocial development relate to the development of substance use, misuse, and dependency? This course is a survey of the interactions of biological, environmental, psychosocial, cognitive and sociocultural factors that pertain to the development of addictions and addictive behaviors. Students will explore the psychological, social, and political factors that shape the human problem of addiction. We will use clinical examples to provide students with an understanding of the dilemmas faced in everyday social work practice that arise from the social and human problems of addiction.
