SWP 501 - Historical, Philosophical, and Theoretical Foundations of Social Work Practice This course examines the historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations of the social work profession and their influence on contemporary practice. Students will trace the evolution of social work from early charitable and reform movements to its current status as a global, justice-oriented profession. Through engagement with key philosophical traditions, critical theories, and major practice models, students will deepen their understanding of the profession’s ethical commitments and diverse knowledge base. Emphasis is placed on analyzing how social work has both shaped and been shaped by broader social, cultural, political, and economic contexts.
