MUS 112 - Survey of American Music History and Culture This course provides an introductory survey of American musical traditions from the 18th century onward, with emphasis on the music of the 20th century. Following a chronological progression, students will explore a vast range of folk, popular, and classical genres and styles to better understand the roles music has played in the cultural, social, and political landscape of North America since colonial times. Topics covered will include nationalism, gender, race and ethnicity, politics, and the practice of musicology. This course is meant to inspire students to deepen their aesthetic appreciation of American musical practices and understand the rich histories and figures surrounding them.
