ESCI 393 - Our Coastal Seas and Climate Change


A course focusing on the geophysical and physical characteristics of the ocean and coastal seas undergoing rapid 20th and 21st century climate change. Topics may include all or a subset of the following: Current sea level rise now and predictions for its behavior in the next century, why sea level varies around the planet, coastal inundation and flooding, storms surges and other kinds of ocean-weather feedbacks including storm energetics, ocean-atmosphere-interactions at longer time scales such as marine heat wave, planetary teleconnections (i.e. El Nino Southern Oscillation and others), waves and erosion, tidal inundation of bays and estuaries, hypoxia, and carbon pollution (ocean acidification).

Prerequisites & Notes: MATH 114; ENVS 203 or GEOL 211; MATH 124 and some physics are recommended.
