Introduction
The Nature, Leisure, and Community Wellness minor at Western Washington University emphasizes the positive impact that nature, recreation, and leisure activities can have on individual and community well-being. This minor explores how time spent in natural environments and engaging in positive recreational and tourism activities contributes to physical health, mental well-being, and social cohesion.
The minor provides students with an understanding of the therapeutic and restorative benefits of nature, such as stress reduction, improved mental health, and enhanced cognitive functioning. It also examines the role of leisure activities in promoting a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Students learn how recreation, tourism, and leisure activities can foster a sense of community, build social connections, and support overall wellness.
Through a combination of coursework and hands-on experiences, students gain the knowledge and tools to promote the wellness benefits of nature and leisure in various settings, such as parks, community organizations, or outdoor programs. The program prepares students to advocate for and design leisure and wellness initiatives that leverage the healing power of nature to improve quality of life for individuals and communities.
