Introduction
Therapeutic recreation — or recreational therapy — is a vital field in which certified professionals use recreation-based interventions and programing to improve the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of individuals with illnesses, disabilities, or other health conditions. Therapeutic recreation is client-centered and strengths-based, taking a holistic approach to health and well-being. Recreation therapists address the whole person — body, mind, and spirit — by engaging clients in meaningful activities that enhance their overall quality of life.
The certificate program offers students the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to work in the diverse and broad profession of therapeutic recreation. It provides students enrolled in other degree programs at Western or individuals pursuing post-baccalaureate credits to meet the “Therapeutic Recreation Content Courses” requirement for the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential offered by the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Students pursuing the CTRS credential will need to complete the option TR internship course RECR 472. Through this program, students will develop competencies in conducting assessments, creating individualized care plans, implementing therapeutic interventions, and evaluating and documenting health-related outcomes.
