Program Information

The Master in Teaching (MIT) program with emphasis in Multilingual Education is designed for candidates who wish to complete a Master’s degree with recommendation for Washington State Residency Certification to teach at the secondary level (middle and high school) and training in dual language education (through ELL and/or Bilingual endorsements). Our comprehensive MIT with emphasis in Multilingual Education program is firmly backed by current research of effective teaching and promoting student learning. Currently the program is only offered through Western’s South King County site.

The program is designed to support professionals working in multilingual settings who are employed by school districts in South King County. Classes will primarily be held on evenings and/or Saturdays at the Puget Sound ESD in Renton. Course work will integrate students’ classroom experience. This MIT program can be completed in six-seven quarters, including full-time student teaching (internship). 

Program Application

Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School and the Secondary Education department requirements below. The GRE and MAT are not application requirements for this graduate program.

Pre-application Requirement

We invite prospective candidates to contact us for more information about the program and for pre-application advising.  Please send transcripts prior to application for review and advising. Some students may need to complete additional endorsement requirements to be eligible.

An endorsement evaluation is required with your application for all endorsements you may be earning. See endorsement requirements at wce.wwu.edu/cert/endorsements. No more than 10 endorsement credits may be outstanding once you begin the MIT program; or by advisement. Endorsements in World Language (Spanish) and Social Studies may be accepted. An evaluation request can be submitted in the online application, or by contacting South King County MIT advisors. Non-Western graduates must also include course descriptions and/or syllabi with their transcripts to determine if there are course equivalencies.

Applicants must meet the basic skills requirement in reading, writing, and mathematics. This may be met by: a) Taking the WEST-B exam, b) SAT scores, c) ACT scores. There is no minimum score requirement for admission. See the Woodring admissions website wce.wwu.edu/admissions/basic-skills for details.

All applicants (except world language) must submit content test scores with their program application by taking the WEST-E or NES exam(s) for the endorsement they are pursuing. Those pursuing a world language endorsement must submit passing ACTFL scores in writing and speaking (Advanced Low) with their application. Application Requirements, preference for bi/multilingual individuals

  • Baccalaureate degree (or degree completed prior to program start date) from a regionally accredited institution. A minimum overall grade point average of 3.0; or see Graduate School GPA eligibility requirements.
  • Meet the basic skills requirement.
  • Unofficial transcripts for every institution of higher learning attended (official transcripts required if admitted).
  • A completed endorsement evaluation.
  • Submitted content test scores, or ACTFL scores for world languages.
  • Resumé.
  • Experience working with youth, preferably in an educational setting, with preference to public secondary schools.
  • Experience with youth and families in diverse socio-economic, cultural, linguistic settings.
  • Essays responding to the prompts (prompts are noted in the online application).
  • Three letters of reference
  • Completion of an approved English composition course, with a grade of B or higher. 
  • Interview by SEC faculty (details provided after application deadline).

Program Completion

To qualify for program completion and recommendation for state of Washington residency certification, candidates must complete the following requirements and assessments outlined on the Secondary Education  main catalog page, and:

  • The Graduate School policy is for program requirements to be completed within five years. While it is possible to earn the Residency teaching certificate without completing the final requirements for the MIT degree, it is not possible to earn the MIT without earning the Residency teaching certificate.

Grade Requirements

Retention in the program requires continuous demonstration of competence in standard oral and written English in all course work. Retention also requires maintenance of a 3.0 quarterly GPA for each quarter upon admission.

Non-Thesis Assessment

Master in Teaching candidates are in the non-thesis option.

Second Master’s Degree

Enrollment must be for a single MEd, MA or MIT program. Students who have earned a MEd or MIT may apply for admission to another MEd program but all requirements of the second program must be met (with possible allowance for some course work taken in the first program). However, all programs must be completed with the minimum number of required credits.
