Introduction

The state of Washington is immersed in global commerce through its many corporations and organizations that locate internationally and foreign companies that have a presence in this state. This program with ESB Business School at Reutlingen University is an imporant step in furthering Western’s international outreach. Graduates from this program will possess fluency in the German language and extensive knowledge of business and management in a global context giving them the basic skills needed to succeed in organizations.

Why Consider an International Business German major?

The International Business German Program provides students with a basic business background covering operations management, organizational behavior, finance, marketing accounting and economics in a cross-cultural learning environment. Students benefit by the immersion in the German organizational culture, providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in the global environment of today.

How to Declare (Admission and Declaration Process):

How to apply: For consideration as a pre-major, provisional major, or full major, complete the online application form at cbe.wwu.edu/applycbe.

Applicants at WWU are accepted into both universities. Students may apply as freshmen or sophomores, but must attain German language proficiency prior to attending ESB.

Typically students will apply in their freshmen year and can be admitted into this program as a freshmen. Students already enrolled in Western and transfer students may apply based upon their ability to finish the requirements:

  • Minimum of a 2.50 cumulative college-level GPA including all previous institutions.
  • Minimum of 2.50 cumulative GPA in all courses taken at Western.
  • Students must have a WWU cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher to be considered in good academic standing with the University.
  • Students who originate at ESB are admitted by that institution.

A desired maximum for this program is five WWU students per year and five ESB students per year.

Grade Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required for a student’s major or minor courses, and supporting courses for majors and minors.

USA Internship (4 credits)


❑ Must complete 4 credits from one of the following courses:

German Language Courses (5 credits)


  •   Credits: 5
  • GERM 202 (and GERM 201 which is a prereq to GERM 202) may also apply towards a German Minor.
  • A German Minor may be attained with the completion of GERM 203, GERM 301, GERM 302, and one GERM elective at the 300 or 400 level. These courses are in addition to the major program of study.

ESB Germany Requirements (90 credits)


Students must complete an internship in each country. A level of German proficiency must be attained prior to the two-year German residency. The German internship will be at an organization whose primary language is German, although most areconversant in English.
