Honors College, University Interdisciplinary Programs

27-38 credits

Introduction

Western’s Honors College allows students to combine the best of a private liberal arts college experience (small classes, interaction with professors and other students, and the opportunity to work on research and creative activities with faculty) with the advantages of a much larger public institution, including a wide variety of majors, outstanding academic facilities, and numerous extra-curricular options.

Why Consider an Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Minor?

Honors College is structured in a way that provides a graduated, on-going experience for students as they engage in increasingly sophisticated work while moving through their Western degree. Students in the Honors College are eligible for HNRS courses and have the opportunity to undertake extended Honors independent study projects in their major fields.

How to Declare (Admission and Declaration Process)

Admission is selective - students apply to join the Honors College through a supplemental application accessed from the Honors College website. Transfer students or students already enrolled in the university may apply on the bases of academic record, a writing sample, and the recommendation of a university or other faculty member.

Declaration of the minor is done through the Registrar’s Office minor declaration e-form.

Grade Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required for a student’s major or minor courses, and supporting courses for majors and minors.

Requirements

Lower-Division Colloquia Core (6-10 credits)

What does “colloquia” mean? Colloquium is from the Latin verb loqui, meaning “to talk or speak.” Our colloquia offer students the opportunity to satisfy General University Requirements (GUR’s) in an intimate Honors setting. Rather than sitting in a lecture hall with 150-plus students for an introductory-level course, students can take equivalent courses with a fraction of that number of students – typically between 20-30 students.

Upper-Division Seminar (6 credits)

Seminars are courses offered in an array of fields that change each year.

  • ❑ Two seminar courses are required:

  • Credits: 3 (repeatable with different topics)

Senior Capstone (2-9 credits)

An Honors Senior Project is required for graduation through the Honors College. This is concentrated work in a student’s major field or another field. It is not unusual for a student to be engaged in Senior Project work before their final year.
