Jazz Studies Minor

29 credits

Introduction

The Jazz Studies Minor consists of a basic core of study in jazz theory and improvisation, jazz arranging and composition, and jazz history, along with ensemble performance and private improvisation instruction. This program is designed for music majors who have an interest in a higher level of jazz performance. The jazz studies minor allows for intensifying studies in jazz while completing a music major.

Admission and Declaration Process:

All students can declare as a Jazz Studies Minor after completing the following steps.

  1. Successfully pass an entrance audition on their primary instrument during priority audition dates. Please visit our website for priority audition dates. Students who audition after priority audition dates will be considered on a space available basis. cfpa.wwu.edu/music/auditions
  2. Successfully audition for jazz ensembles. Ensemble auditions are scheduled each September. cfpa.wwu.edu/ensemble-auditions Students who miss ensemble auditions should contact the Jazz Area Coordinator, Professor Kevin Woods.
  3. Schedule a meeting with the Jazz Area Coordinator, Professor Kevin Woods, to determine eligibility and gain permission to declare the minor.
  4. Schedule a meeting with the Program Coordinator, Lee Anne Frahn, to declare Jazz Studies minor. 

Admissions: All students must successfully complete an Entrance Audition on their primary instrument or voice to begin academic course work towards all music degree programs. Please visit our website for priority audition dates. Students who audition after priority audition dates will be considered on a space available basis. Due to the sequential nature of the music curriculum, mid-year applications are not recommended. Students electing to begin in a quarter other than fall should seek advisement before enrollment. cfpa.wwu.edu/music/auditions

Grade Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required for all music major and minor courses.
