REL 201 - Global Religions I Global Religions I covers the origins and development of the major religious traditions originating in southern and eastern Asia and now practiced all over the world. These include the primary “dharmic” religions in India (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism), and the two main strands of Chinese folk religion (Confucian ethics and Taoism). Adherents of these religions together account for about a quarter of humanity. We study primary source texts (in translation) and artwork from each religion, reviewing core ideas and practices and the ways the religions shaped and were shaped by each other over time. Students will be equipped with basic terminology in the academic study of religion as well as critical key terms from the languages of each religious tradition.
