ENRG 386 - The Economics of Electricity Markets


This course focuses on markets for electricity and the role of public policy in shaping outcomes. Some topics may include competition policy and business strategies in wholesale markets, tradeoffs in regulation of retail price such as impacts on clean energy incentives and equity concerns, effective purchasing of clean electricity by firms and individuals, the impact of market structures on incentives for reliability and additional generation capacity, and potential market implications of a future grid predominantly powered with zero marginal cost clean electricity. Also offered as ECON 386.
