A/HI 388 - The Museum


This course will address the history and theory of museums, while simultaneously introducing students to contemporary museum practices and various aspects of museum work. In addition to critically examining the development of the institution of the museum in the United States, the course will also consider the ways societies have collected, classified, and displayed knowledge and material culture throughout time. Through readings, discussions and sessions with museum professionals, students will gain knowledge and understanding of the nature of museums, the work that they do, and the dynamics at play, both within the institution and within their larger communities.

Prerequisites & Notes: Minor status in Museum Studies, or instructor permission.
