AMST 318 - Contemporary Issues in Arab American Studies

Arab and Muslim Americans are among the more criminalized communities in the U.S. today, and an analysis of key aspects of their circumstances helps us explore some of the more urgent issues of our time, such as political racism and Islamophobia, Palestine and transnational solidarity, and gender and intersectionality. This is an interdisciplinary course foregrounding the voices of Arab Americans, and drawing upon scholarly writing, social media, and cultural production. It is also very comparative: our discussions of issues such as racism, sexism, negative stereotypes, surveillance, advocacy, and activism, while focused on Arab American communities, will inevitably look at how these social issues impact other racialized communities.

Prerequisites & Notes: AMST 252 or AMST 301; or instructor permission.
