MLE 445 - Methods for Teaching Developing, Expanding, and Bridging Multilingual Learners

An introduction to the theoretical and practical concerns in teaching English as an additional language/bilingual education to students at developing, expanding, & bridging levels of language proficiency across P-12 grades. The course is framed by a culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogical approach, including strategic uses of translanguaging. It builds on the functional approach to language established in MLE444 by providing guided practice in material selection and development, with a specific focus on building students’ disciplinary literacy. Students engage in task and lesson design that integrates interpretive and expressive modes of language. We also examine a variety of formative assessment strategies. This course requires participation in an embedded practicum with language learners.
