ESCI 561 - Mechanical and Environmental Systems in Buildings


This graduate-level course, stacked with ENRG/ESCI 461, covers heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in large buildings, and the technical concepts of energy efficiency in the built environment, with an emphasis on existing buildings. This course takes a quantitative but accessible approach to monitoring, analysis and evaluation of commercial buildings and measures to improve their energy efficiency, occupant comfort and environmental quality. Topics covered include indoor lighting systems, building heating and cooling loads, indoor air quality and ventilation, humidity and thermal comfort, HVAC system configurations and efficiency, economic analysis and metrics. The course includes a field/lab component in which students will measure energy use and analyze saving potential in an existing building. Also offered as ENRG 561.

Prerequisites & Notes: Graduate status. Familiarity with building energy systems is helpful.
