HIST 349 - History of the U.S. South The course will examine the broad history of the American South from colonization to the near present, with special emphasis on the role of the South in shaping national identity and political structures in the early Republic, on the history of slavery, racial oppression and violence, on class and gender relations within the region, on the unique agricultural and environmental history of the region, on the role of evangelical Christianity, on the cultural and economic interdependence of black and white southerners, on the Civil Rights Movement and its legacy, and on the re-emergence of conservative politics in the region and the national influence of those politics in the second half of the twentieth century. The course will also look at the idea of the global South by comparing the region to the rest of the U.S. and analyzing this relationship in a transnational frame.
Prerequisites & Notes: Junior status; one course from: HIST 103, HIST 104, HIST 111, HIST 112, HIST 113, or instructor permission. Credits: 5 Grade Mode: Letter
