HIST 467 - Self and Society in 19th Century America Topics in American cultural history, late 18th to the late 19th century, that emphasize evolving and changing definitions of the ‘self’ in relationship to larger social and cultural change. Focuses on first-person accounts to explore race, ethnicity, gender, class, and other areas of identity, as they intertwine with larger cultural expectations and opportunities - and in interaction with some of the most important events in U.S. history in the 19th century.
