AMST 202 - Introduction to American Indian Studies This course serves as an introduction to a diverse group of people with thousands of years of history utilizing primary and secondary sources. There are over 500 distinct Indigenous nations in the United States, each of them with unique culture, history, and contemporary problems. Students will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the diversity and complexity of Indigenous experiences in what becomes the United States. In addition, students will learn a chronological overview of Native American History, including a basic timeline of federal policies such as treaties, removal, assimilation, termination, and self-determination, and understand key concepts such as sovereignty and settler colonialism. Furthermore, students will consider these issues and concepts from the perspective of Indigenous authors, scholars and activists.
