SALI 590 - Salish Sea Studies Community Seminar

This course gives students and instructors creative space to explore the complex ecologies and human experiences of the Salish Sea region, an international and transboundary body of water. This place-based course creates a learning community among students enrolled or interested in the Salish Sea Studies minor. Students in the minor must complete one course per learning domain: 1) art, storytelling, and science communication; 2) Salish Sea histories and cultures; 3) US/Canada and WA/BC relationships, and 4) ecological health and restoration. Instructors in SALI 490/590 will highlight how the four learning domains will be activated throughout the course, guiding students to explore interconnections across their self-designed curriculum for the minor. The course outline will look different each quarter, with new themes, readings, and learning activities; students can take the course up to six times. Every quarter, students will complete weekly reflections and a final narrative essay to synthesize their learning experiences. All learning activities and readings will be designed to ensure that students complete approximately 30 hours of work per quarter to earn 1 credit for the course. S/U grading. Repeatable up to 6 credits, including original course.
