BIOL 509 - Microbial Ecology


Study of microbial communities in aquatic, terrestrial and extreme environments, with emphasis on the functional role of microbes in terms of energy flow, nutrient cycling and biogeochemical transformations. Discussions of community structure and diversity, evolutionary history, and phylogenetic relationships will be covered. All students will be asked to put together a literature review on a topic of interest within the broad umbrella of microbial ecology.
