SOC 386 - Environmental Sociology


Introduction to the subfield of environmental sociology, which is concerned with the systematic study of patterned relations between social systems and ecosystems. Accordingly, the course focuses on human behavior, biophysical processes, and their conjoint constitution. Emphasizes major theories and topics in environmental sociology and may include exploration of Human Exemptionalism Paradigm/New Ecological Paradigm, social construction of the environment, growth machine, ecological footprint, treadmill of production, ecological modernization, reflexivity/anti-reflexivity, risk society and environmental (in)justice, and environmental and ecology movements.

Prerequisites & Notes: Any one course from: SOC 221, SOC 234, SOC 251, SOC 255, SOC 260, SOC 268 or SOC 269; or instructor permission.
