ELL 460 - Sociocultural Theory and Policy Sequence for P-12 Teachers This course provides a historical, legal, theoretical and policy foundation to understand experiences of Bilingual students in U.S public schools. We will examine issues related to the education of language minority students from global to local contexts. Students will understand sociocultural and equity issues of schooling for English learners in the U.S. We will explore sociocultural theory, family and community engagement and the laws and policies regarding teaching English to speakers of other languages. The course presents research on program models and effective school practices with culturally and linguistically diverse students. Students will become familiar with language development standards across domains of reading, writing, listening and speaking as these interact with content standards across program models and instructional approaches.
Prerequisites & Notes: Admitted to the ESLT program or approval of the ESOL Endorsement Program Director. Co-requisite: ELL 561 or ELL 461. Credits: 4 Grade Mode: Letter
