HIST 483 - Early Modern Japan This course explores the cultural and intellectual foundations of early modern Japan (1600-1868), considering how key ideas and patterns of thought took shape and transformed in response to the decline of medieval ideologies and the formation of new social and technical realities. Topics of study include popular religion and literature, the rise of empiricism, secularization, and the emergence of a new “Japanese” cultural identity.
