You hold in your hand–or more likely, your web browser–an invitation to discovery, a call to an adventure in learning. Despite the many years I have spent in academia, looking at Western’s catalog never fails to fill me with excitement: the sheer range of courses available, and their excellence across the board, takes me right back to the start of my own intellectual journey when everything seemed possible.

Although Western graduates are life-long learners, you may never have a better opportunity than now to explore your interests and immerse yourself in an innovative and interactive community of knowledge. In these pages you can explore everything from the latest discoveries shaping the world of tomorrow, to the foundations of culture, sciences, mathematics, history and art that have defined the world of today. At Western you not only have the chance to learn from some of the country’s finest faculty, you can collaborate with them to develop new ideas and challenge our understanding of ourselves and the world.

Beyond our classrooms, Western is recognized as a place where service learning, community engagement and love of the outdoors run deep. Our students know that learning isn’t limited to the classroom, and that the best use of higher education is to put it to higher purposes, whether that’s in the community, or on the slopes of the North Cascades. I urge you to use this catalog as a map to find those opportunities as well, and chart a course to being a leader for the positive change you want to see in the world.

As you look through this catalog, and as you pass through Western, I hope you will take advantage of these special opportunities to be adventurous and step outside your comfort zone; to not only build upon what you already know, but explore new frontiers as well.

President
