EAST 382 - Religion and Society in Japan


A detailed examination of the major religious and philosophical traditions of Japan: the agrarian religion of Shintoism, the Confucian system of ethics, imported from China, and Buddhism, which though originally from India also came to Japan through China. Particular attention is given to the interaction and intertwining of these traditions, and of the ways they shaped and supported the lives of individuals and communities. Also offered as REL 382.
